GA 400 southbound Exit 5 is closed; use temporary Exit 5A for Abernathy and Hammond. Mount Vernon Highway path is finished; PATH400 and Hammond work ahead.

The biggest road job in Sandy Springs right now is the state’s SR 400 express lanes, which have already moved the southbound Exit 5 ramps. The city’s Mount Vernon Highway path is now finished, utility work continues on the Johnson Ferry and Mount Vernon project, and the PATH400 trail is under construction along Georgia 400.
Updated Oct. 15: the city has accepted the finished Mount Vernon Highway multi-use path and intersection project. GDOT had not published an October project newsletter when we checked, so the GA 400 details below are from its September issue.

SR 400 Express Lanes
The project adds express lanes in both directions on about 16 miles of Georgia 400, from the MARTA North Springs station (Exit 5C) in Sandy Springs to about 1 mile north of McFarland Parkway (Exit 12) in Forsyth County. Work runs day and night, with overnight work used to cut daytime disruption, and GDOT expects everything to be finished by 2031, according to the project site.
What it means in Sandy Springs now:
- Southbound Exit 5 has moved. On Aug. 29 two temporary exits opened on GA 400 southbound for the first phase of construction:
- Exit 5A for Abernathy Road and Hammond Drive, about 1.1 miles south of the old Exit 5
- Exit 5B, a MARTA-only exit for North Springs station, about 0.6 miles south of the old Exit 5
- GDOT’s September newsletter says crews in this segment are moving earth near Spalding Drive and Northridge Road, clearing trees, and installing temporary striping, concrete barriers and drainage ahead of future lane shifts.
- Temporary barriers are going up on GA 400 northbound between the Chattahoochee River and Holcomb Bridge Road.
GDOT asks drivers to follow posted signs and stay in the right exit lane early, even though navigation apps have been updated. Sign up for project alerts on the project site.
Checking the state network
511GA is the state’s official source for incidents, construction and lane closures on I-285, GA 400 and the state routes through the city. It has a live map, cameras and an account for alerts.
City projects
From the city’s featured projects page, with the status the city last posted:
| Project | Where | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Johnson Ferry Road and Mount Vernon Highway improvements | East of Roswell Road near the library | Johnson Ferry Road in final configuration from Roswell Road to Spruill Lane; utility relocations continue on Mount Vernon Highway (July update) |
| Mount Vernon Highway corridor improvements | Sandy Springs Library to the Sandy Springs MARTA station | Finished: substantial completion Aug. 28, final acceptance by Sept. 18 (Oct. 6 council minutes) |
| PATH400 trail extension | Along GA 400 inside the Perimeter | Segments 1 and 3 under construction, due early 2028; Segment 2 expected to start this fall and take about three years |
| Hammond Drive improvements | Roswell Road to Glenridge Drive | Construction expected to begin in 2026 |
The new pattern at Johnson Ferry and Mount Vernon
The two roads are now two-way where they meet Roswell Road and are separated from each other. The city says:
- Northbound on Roswell Road, away from I-285, you cannot turn right onto Johnson Ferry Road.
- Southbound on Roswell Road, you cannot turn left onto Mount Vernon Highway.
- To get from one road to the other, use Spruill Lane, about half a mile up, which has signals at both ends.
Paving and utility work
The city resurfaces streets by priority using pavement condition scores and aims to give at least a week’s notice before work begins, according to its paving page. Streets stay open, but do not park in the road while crews are working. The city’s Pavement Condition Explorer map shows scores by street.
Utility crews digging for cable, gas, power or fiber must get a city permit, leave a flyer at every affected home and post a sign for underground work over 500 feet. Call the utility named on the sign first. The city’s Utility Permit Map shows who is working where, the city’s utility work page says.
On the ballot
On Nov. 3, voters decide whether to renew the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST), which would fund projects through 2032. The city’s proposed list totals $129,191,942 across three tiers. The top tier includes the second phase of the Hammond Drive corridor ($44.6 million), a Roswell Road intersection at Morgan Falls Road ($6.1 million) and the sidewalk program ($16 million), according to the city’s TSPLOST 2026 page. Our voting guide has the election details.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Exit 5 on GA 400 southbound closed in Sandy Springs? The SR 400 Express Lanes project replaced it with two temporary exits on Aug. 29: Exit 5A for Abernathy Road and Hammond Drive, about 1.1 miles south, and Exit 5B, a MARTA-only exit for North Springs station, about 0.6 miles south.
When will the GA 400 express lanes be finished? The Georgia Department of Transportation says all planned construction for the SR 400 Express Lanes is expected to be complete by 2031, subject to change.
How do I check traffic and road closures in Sandy Springs? Use 511GA, the state’s traffic site, at 511ga.org or by dialing 511. For city streets, call the Sandy Springs Call Center at 770-730-5600, open 24 hours.
Can I turn right from Roswell Road onto Johnson Ferry Road? Not northbound. Under the new configuration you cannot turn right onto Johnson Ferry Road from northbound Roswell Road, or left onto Mount Vernon Highway from southbound Roswell Road. Use Spruill Lane to get between the two.
